Stød Timing and Domain in Danish

چکیده

This study investigates the timing of stød, a type phonological nonmodal phonation related to creaky voice in Danish, relative syllable. Stød-bearing syllables are characterized by high fundamental frequency (F0) and modal at beginning syllable followed nonmodal, often low F0 towards end (the stød phase proper). However, these two phases each other has been debated. To investigate this, throughout word proper were analyzed five types monosyllabic words. The results show that across first (high F0) coordinates with rhyme onset, whilst second is timed center sonorant rhyme, contrast previous hypotheses timing. relationship formalized using framework Articulatory Phonology. In doing so, additions theory proposed account for biphasic nature

F0, voice quality, and Danish stød revisited

Danish stød is a syllable prosody, hitherto described as a kind of creaky voice with tonal side effects. One such is the well established, though not ubiquitous, abrupt lowering of F0 towards the end of the syllable. Eli Fischer-Jørgensen found, in the 1970s and 1980s, a difference also in the beginning of stressed syllables: F0 is higher in the beginning of syllables with stød. Confirming her ...

Laryngealization or Pitch Accent – the Case of Danish Stød

Recent proposals make Danish stød the phonetic manifestation of a HL tonal pattern compressed within one syllable. This review of the relevant aspects of Danish stød and intonation demonstrates that (1) such a tonal representation of stød is contradicted by the phonetic reality. (2) Stød is distributed in words according to the same principles across regional varieties of Danish, but tonal patt...

Stød and Length: Acoustic and Cognitive Reality?

Three questions in the analysis of Danish stød are addressed. (1) We try and establish an acoustic reality behind a proposed phonological analysis of consonants with stød as long (moraic) in opposition to short stødless (non-moraic) consonants and fail. (2) Vowels with stød are phonologically long; they are proposed also to be bi-moraic, with the second mora carrying the stød. We confirm the ac...

Acoustics of stød size=2>in Livonian

The paper focuses on the phonetic realisation of the Livonian stød. An investigation of the temporal and tonal characteristics of words with and without stød consisting of a long first syllable and a short second syllable in spontaneous speech was carried out. The changes in pitch alignment, durations and duration ratios of the syllables in disyllabic words were analysed and the role of intensi...

Eskilstuna as the tonal key to Danish

This study considers the distribution of creak/stød in relation to the tonal profile in the variety of Central Swedish (CSw) spoken in Eskilstuna. It is shown that creak/stød correlates with the characteristic HL fall at the end of the intonation phrase and that this fall has earlier timing in Eskilstuna, than in the standard variety of CSw. Also, a tonal shift at the left edge in focused words...
